Book Review: A lot of good ideas, not enough glue.
Summary: 3 Stars
I admire Steven Hall's attempt to make a novel that combines aspects of a good thriller, a horror, and a large amount of romance. The end result is not entirely satisfactory. The majority of the first half of the book just comes off as a poor-man's Haruki Murakami (cited as a major influence on Hall's webpage) and as the story develops, things just seemed to go downhill. Eric and Clio's romance is dull and poorly conceived and at no point in the book did I feel heartbroken over Eric's loss, nor was I very intrigued to find out exactly what had happened in his past. The way their conversations are written are kitschy and at times sound like two sixteen-year-olds flirting during study hall. Reading some of these sections was irritating at best. Many ideas are not expanded upon and seem tacked on for more filler (Mycroft Ward for example).
That's not to say this book is entirely void of merits -- there are some very unique concepts here, some very neat ideas, but Hall tries to juggle too many light sketches of said ideas and in the end a lot of it falls flat. A decent read, but nothing I would truly recommend.
