Book Review: Let the cartoons do the talking

The cartoons in this collection were all rejected by "The New Yorker," but not because they weren't "good" enough to be featured in that esteemed magazine. They were rejected for reasons of taste... they are all too "out there" or offensive for a mainstream publication, and I say this in a positive way. These are shocking, funny (and often, shockingly funny) cartoons, and it's great that they are finally seeing the light of day in this collection.
That being said, I have to subtract a couple stars from my overall rating because of the editor's choice to include way too much biographical material about the individual cartoonists. Not only is there brief information about each of the many cartoonists at the back of the book (which would have been fine), "The Rejection Collection" goes way overboard by including a full two-page spread before each brief set of cartoons which consists of an identical questionnaire completed by each cartoonist. Although some of their attempts to be clever in filling out the questionnaire are amusing, all of this biographical information actually takes much longer to read than the handful of cartoons that follow! As other reviewers have noted, this really breaks up the flow... just when you're laughing at a couple hilarious cartoons and looking forward to more, boom! You're looking at the same questionnaire for the umpteenth time.
No offense to the contributors, but why exactly did the editor think that the general reader would be fascinated by lengthy explorations of the backgrounds of so many random, obscure cartoonists? It would have been much better to have just included brief biographical info at the end of the book, and to have included many more cartoons instead. After all, the humor and warped attitudes expressed in the cartoons themselves give us the best window into their creators' minds. Truly, the editor of a cartoon collection should have understood that "a picture says a thousand words."
