Book Reviews of The Return of Anti Semitism

Book Review: ... is, ironically, chock-full of anti-islamism
Summary: 3 Stars

This review is a condensed version of an earlier one which, judging by the ratings I see, was not helpful to many people.

I read this book because I have encountered, in the last few years, examples of anti-Semitism in my liberal, intelligentsia friends from whom I did not expect it. I was looking for a reasoned critique of the circumstances that lead to anti-Semitic sentiment.

Instead, I found a book that seems as knee-jerk as the bigotry it vilifies. Schoenfeld's analysis of anti-Semitism in the Arabic world is completely circular: he concludes that Arabs are anti-Semitic because they circulate hateful propaganda and just plain don't like Jews. One can only conclude that blind prejudice is inherent to the Arabic psyche. Compare this to a recent analysis of anti-Semitism in Egypt (from Daedalus, I think) that pointed out that moderate Egyptian royalty initially adopted anti-Israel rhetoric to protect themselves from fundamentalist Muslims (who accused the royalty of being too symapthetic to the United States and not "Islamic" enough). What started as rhetoric became, inevitably, policy. This analysis yields much more insight into the problem of anti-Semitism in the modern Middle East than Schoenfeld's tautologies do.

Schoenfeld also labels as "anti-Semitic" American/European liberals who criticise Israel -- specifically, Israel's management of relations with the Arab world and particularly with Palestine. According to this definition most Jewish Americans, including my Holocaust-survivor mother-in-law, are anti-Semitic. Not, in my experience, an accurate view of Holocaust survivors.

This book does provide a thorough litany of anti-Semitic incidents but the analysis of causes and of context is impoverished at best and, at worst, racist.
