Book Reviews of The Revolution: A Manifesto

Book Review: A Differnet Drummer
Summary: 5 Stars

Ron Paul was by far the most interesting presidential candidate to compete in the 2008 Presidential Election. Although he ran as a nominal Republican he really embraced what today is considered the Libertarian philosophy and so was really more of third party candidate. As such the duopoly (mainstream Republicans/Democrats) that routinely monopolize presidential elections and the media were already in the process of marginalizing him, when it was discovered that his ideas had apparently resonated with a large number of citizens and he had gained a good deal financial support from small contributors. This gave him a fleeting place in some nightly TV reports and third page mention in the newspapers, but in the end he was considered too eccentric to be a serious candidate and so was in marginalized regardless of his appeal. Since nobody in the media actually asked him what his message was or inquired why it proved so popular, this book provides the curious with good understanding of where Paul stands on the issues.

His basic belief is that the framers of the U.S. Constitution knew exactly what they were saying when they wrote this guide for governance of the U.S. Federation. From this he argues that the Constitution is not a `living document' subject to reinterpretation every few years, but rather is a precise statement of powers, duties, and rights that should only be changed by means of formal amendments (as it provides for). The Federalist Papers provide a pretty good background in understanding what the framers of the Constitution were trying to build. Yet from the first there was controversy on how the Constitution was to be implemented. Paul of course comes down squarely on Jefferson's side in his great disagreement with Hamilton over what in today's terms would small versus big government. (Actually it was much more complex than this, but could not be explained then or now in 30 second sound bites.) Paul clearly believes in decentralized, federated government and argues for less government involvement at all levels. He makes one particularly interesting point when argues that every U.S. citizen should be treated by every other citizen as a sovereign and independent individual rather than a member of group regardless of racial, ethnic, religious, or national origins. This would be his solution to the still nasty tendency to `tolerate' rather accept folks who are different from the majority in any given situation.

So does Paul have all the answers to the problems facing the U.S. and is being suppressed by a conspiracy of the duopoly and the media? Unfortunately no this is not the case; the real answer is that since his ideas do not fit into the preconceived notions of either the media or the two political parties they border on the incomprehensible to them. His ideas are not all that implausible and in point of fact ought to be seriously analyzed and debated. We owe that much to our founding fathers.
