Book Reviews of The Rivan Codex: Ancient Texts of THE BELGARIAD and THE MALLOREON

Book Review: A poor offering from a talented author!
Summary: 1 Stars

After the success of the Belgariad and the Mallorean you would expect another classic from David and Leigh Eddings. Pity this book does not match up to that. I think the words "Sell Out" apply here. He ought to be ashamed, selling this off the back of the success his other books brought. Come on David! Putting the same story in two different books was bad enough (Polgara the sorceress and Belgarath the sorceror) but this is where the line must be drawn.

Book Review: A History book for Eddings's world's fans.
Summary: 4 Stars

Do not expect a book as thrilling as the Belgariad or the Malloreon because this time, there's absolutely NO action. But if you really are a FAN of David and Leigh Eddings (as I am), you'll love this book. It contains the theological, social and cultural backgrounds of each country, including money value, traditionnal costumes and other stuff. It also contains comments by David Eddings, advising you not to try to write Fantasy unless you really have the vocation, or simply telling you what to do and what not to do if you still want to write... In a few words, this book is funny to read because you learn many thing about how characters came to life, but do not expect to find even a single once of suspense in it...

Book Review: oh puhleese, not more merchandising
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a definite anoraks only book for the sort of people who have trouble remembering that the belgariad and mallorean are fiction. About the only positive thing I can say about this is that it is comprehensive. Personally, I want a book that I can really get into. I like a story that I haven't read before. I wish the authors would start writing new novels rather than churning out old stuff. What little justification there was for Belgarath the sorceror and Polgara the sorceress is completely absent here.

Book Review: Fantastic, a great insight into the Belgariad and More
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have read The Belgariad, The Mallorean and the books on Belgarath and Polgara this work is an amazing read. I have been a fan of Eddings' work for many years and have read all of his books numerous times. This work gave me a valuable insight into how one writes books of such magnitude and force, and is as enjoyable to read as all of his other works.

My thanks Mr Eddings Please keep up the good work.

Book Review: One for fans of the earlier works.
Summary: 3 Stars

This book sets out some of the material used in the production of David and Leigh Eddings' eariler series "The Belgariad" and "Malloreon". It is of a lot of interest to fans of these works but of only limited interest to others. (The introductory section being the exception since that is reasonably general).

The book gives an insight into the process of creation of the worlds of Eddings but since it was prelimnary material which was modified for the actual novels it fails to add as much to the reader's understanding of the novels.
