Book Reviews of The Rivan Codex: Ancient Texts of THE BELGARIAD and THE MALLOREON

Book Review: A book to easily put down.
Summary: 1 Stars

This book is a collection of details about charcters who are in previous books. It reminds me of a Friday afternoon publisher thinking what can we do very little work for to make some more money. Only for the real enthusiast of Eddings Belgarth, etc.. I found it difficult to get into unlike the normal Eddings offering. It has certainly put me off buying any future Edddings works.

Book Review: Dont get this!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have read all of the Eddings books, except Althalus so far, and was appaled at the quality of this book. I have read and enjoyed both Polgara and Belgarath, and having read the other 4 series' more than once, after reading this I am unable to even think about re-reading the Balgariad again. You get too much information without anything interesting actually worth reading - Its basically a list of details that he composed before writing any of his books, and really not worth buying...

Book Review: Scary levels of background detail
Summary: 4 Stars

I can understand people being disappointed in this book if they were expecting it to be another standalone prequel telling a single coherent story, but as long as you know what you're in for (and have a certain level of interest in the Belgariad/Malloreon in the first place), then you'll have a whale of a time. There's enough stuff here to make its publication more than a cynical cash-in, and though it's by necessity old news to anyone who's read the books it refers to, there are more details than you could ever want on the people and countries you've come to know and love (and it's heartening to see just how much planning goes into some of these epics). After the painful tedium of re-reading exactly the same story for the third time in Polgara the Sorceress, it's a breath of fresh air to finally see things from such a wide range of different angles. The only thing that really brings it down is the patronising commentary from Eddings himself...

Book Review: For true lovers of the Belgariad and Mallorean
Summary: 5 Stars

This is definately a book for those readers who want to know how the ideas behind the stories were formulated. It is really just a comprehensive list about each of the different gods and their people, but to the avid fan such as myself, I would reccommend it whole heartedly.

Book Review: Should perhaps have been published before the Belgariad, etc
Summary: 1 Stars

I saw no reviews before I bought this book and would have paid no heed if I had - this may have been my mistake. I have been a a great fan of the Eddings series for many years but felt completely let down by the book. It was very difficult re-visiting old ground and, for the first time ever, I failed to finish reading a book. The problem I have now is I am not sure whether I would buy another book by this long-time favourite author. My best advice is don't buy it.
