Book Review: Audio edition. Maybe it's better if read?

For the record, when I say it might be better if you read it yourself, I do not mean to fault the narrator. She was OK; not great, but not too distracting, which makes her better than most. I think the book might work for some people if they have the (very long) time to sit quietly and savor it. *IF* they can stand the author's writing style!
I like good books about children, and I like to listen to books while driving, so I picked this up at the library. I wanted to like it, especially when I discovered it is set just a few miles from where I live and I recognize many of the areas. I somehow made it through two whole discs, but only because I was on a two hour trip and had no other choice! I kept waiting for something to happen. After mind-numbingly long descriptions of dead bugs and tea bags, the author would start down a plot path, only to stop and veer off in another direction. She seems enamored of her own descriptive phrases, if I can even call such endless wordings and mixed metaphors "phrases." Reminded me of school when we practiced description. What god-awful pretentious writing.
