Book Review: An informative introduction to Hip Hop music.

If you are a relative newcomer to Hip Hop with an interest in what's gone before then this book is for you. It serves as a good reference to the music but bear in mind it's only a mini Rough Guide and is far from definitive. In terms of the culture as a whole it is sketchy with only a cursory nod to b-boying and graffiti writers. Outside of America it only gives a brief overview of the British, Canadian and French scenes. The best aspect of the book is the manner in which the entries are written. The information is accurate and revealing and, thankfully, the author writes subjectively, praising and criticising the artists in an intelligent way. A minor gripe is the grouping of acts as collectives e.g. Quannum, Hieros, Golden State Warriors, Def Squad, Dungeon Family and notably the Juice Crew. These acts are more easily identifiable as individuals; Kool G Rap, Outkast, Souls of Mischief etc. and in most cases more worthy of their own entries than some other acts in the book (Esham anybody?) There are a couple of gems in there, the Rammellzee entry is great and there is a short but enlightening introduction making reference to a New York city planning official named Robert Moses. All in all a useful book, ideal for anyone wanting information on how to expand their Hip Hop collection.
