Book Review: Lyrical Novel of Love
Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very lovely novel filled with gentle passages of love, disappointment and moving on. It is set in London and in Iran, where a daughter of a general ends up being disappointed in life and tries to find peace within herself once she moved to London. Her daughter, Sara, returns to Iran to see what the black hole in her mother's heart conveyed and rediscovered that she didn't know everything that her mother had gone through in the name of love. This novel is both Sara and Maryam's stories.
The novel does jump from past to present-times but it is done in such a way that the reader does not get confused. Even the chapters dealing with Sara or Maryam are not confusing and it's presented in a way that you can't help but strive to understand the two characters better. Their love for one another is telling even after a tragedy happened to Sara. One can imagine the guilt and fear that Maryam feels as she flees London to go back home.
This is a quick read and a impressive one. It is a slight novel that packs quite a punch of a story. It combines history and tradition with a modern voice in a lyrical and lush style. It gives the reader a different insight of living in Iran before modern day.
