Book Review: "Fictional historical fiction" becomes over the top story

The Sanctuary is a work of fiction, one that is meant to emulate "historical fiction," while clearly being fiction. Call this "fictional historical fiction." The Da Vinci Code is the new archetype of this genre.
In The Sanctuary, a 300 year old search for the fountain of youth leads to evil men, family secrets, a few people that seem to have access to information and money at will, and the professional and amateur people working to solve this particular mystery.
As a novel, I guess The Sanctuary has some suspense and action that engages the reader. The beginning was engrossing. But the story became more and more unbelievable, culminating in, of all things, an attack by ravenous wolves? Talk about trying to capitalize on the Little Red Riding Hood syndrome!
After awhile, this novel became, well, "tiring" to read. I just wanted it to be finished, but it wasn't so terrible that I needed to put it away before finishing it. I just wanted to be... finished.
It was just too unbelievable. Now how about that... I want believable fiction! The Sanctuary just didn't take me to that happy place.
