Book Reviews of The Saturday Wife

Book Review: Pretty good read
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall I liked this book a lot. However, it was a bit "lighter" than I expected given her other books. In fact, I don't think this was as good as her other books have been.

Book Review: Ragan's best yet
Summary: 5 Stars

The Saturday Wife is a superb satire involving Modern Orthodox Jewry living in Long Island and Connecticut, as it happens. Very very funny. Yet gives plenty of food for thought about Modern Orthodoxy and religion in general. If you like Jewish themes this book is for you. It took me out of a long depression and I have been feeling just fine ever since I read it. Laughter is indeed the medicine. Read it.

Book Review: Ragen is no Flaubert!
Summary: 2 Stars

I've read Gustave Flaubert; I've taught "Madame Bovary; Ms. Ragen, you are no Flaubert, and Delilah is no Madame Bovary!

Book Review: Saturday wife -- so so.
Summary: 3 Stars

Imagine Emma Bovary, even dumber and greedier and married to a rabbi.

Delilah is a beautiful but horribly spoiled and desperately needy girl. She longs for the sweet life but is too idiotic to realize that she has a pretty good deal right where she is. She marries a meek rabbi and proceeds to ruin his life and everything else she touches.

If the author had followed Madam Bovary more closely than this she would've written a hackneyed tragedy; sensibly she goes for the jokes and turns this into an arch, but rather preachy comedy.

Parts of Saturday Wife are snort out loud funny but the tone is a little too heavy handed for me to really go with it. Plus, Delilah never grows up. She never seems to realize what a twit she is and the character never changes. She never once reaches a point where the reader can do anything but despise her. The book had amusing moments but I won't ever pick it up again.

Book Review: This deserves more than 5 stars! It's a great read . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

I preordered SATURDAY WIFE and wanted to save it for the weekend. However, when it arrived on Wednesday (I didn't expect it until tomorrow - Monday), I thought I'd just read a little. I couldn't put it down. It was such fun to read. Now I have to wait for Naomi Ragen to write another wonderful story. She can't write 'em soon enough or often enough for me! I've read all her books and love them all. Thank you Amazon for sending me this pre-ordered book so quickly. I wait so patiently for good books to arrive and this one came none too soon!
