Book Review: Worthy history

The subject is one of the most exciting in British history: the exploits of the frigate captains of the Napoleonic Wars. This is real-life Hornblower or Aubrey, or indeed Drinkwater (the author's own creation). And yet... frankly, the book really isn't that gripping, and I love the subject. Enumerating encounter after encounter, it gets rather samey after a time, and my thoughts are that, if the Nathaniel Drinkwater series is anything like this, no wonder he's not developed the same stature as the other two mentioned heroes. It's all a bit wooden (pardon the pun), and smacks more of William James than the better modern historians. All in all, worthy, OK, but lacking in sparkle.
