Book Reviews of The Seance

Book Review: The Seance
Summary: 4 Stars

The Séance by Joan Lowery Nixon is a very interesting book. It is a mixture of feelings. It is mysterious, happy, and sad. I highly recommend this book. As I was reading it, I could picture what the author wrote. He words were so beautifully written, that I could see what was happening in my head. I never wanted to put this book down. The book wasn't predictable like most books that I have read. When I did try to predict what was going to happen next, I couldn't. I tried to predict the murder; I thought I was 100% right but it turns out it was the last person you would expect! It was so shocking!
Lauren, the main character, is an orphan who liver with her great aunt. A girl she secretly envies moves in with her. Everyone loves this girl. Her name is Sara. People in the town gossip a lot but everyone is oblivious to what is really going on. Sure, these rumors go around, but they aren't true.
This book can get scary at times, and it definitely catches your eye. This book you can judge by its cover. When you read this, you will want to go out and buy other books by Joan Lowery Nixon. My favorite seen was when Lauren got to talk to one of the cute guys at her school. She isn't really noticed much so it was a pleasant point of the book.

Book Review: The Seance was decent
Summary: 2 Stars

The séance was about a murder that occurred during a séance that was held by a bunch of young children. I personally didn't enjoy reading The Séance because I felt it was unrealistic. I felt this was because the ending didn't end the way you would have hoped it would. Also if you are in high school this is a good book to read.
You may enjoy reading this if you enjoy a mystery full of plot twists. Over all this book may interest others more then it did my self. So if you looking for a thrilling book The Séance is a good choice.

Book Review: The seance
Summary: 5 Stars

The Characters in the book are Lauren, Sara Martin, Aunt Melvamay or Aunt Mel, Allie, Maddie Cartney, Dana, Roberta Campion, and Luemma. Lauren is very safe and doesn't like to get into trouble. Sara is the one who gets all the guys to like her and she's the troublesome one in the group. Aunt Mel is very kept to herself and caring. Allie is Lauren's best friend and is very talkative in the group. Maddie is the carefree girl in the group. She doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. Dana is the heavy set and is the self conscious one. Roberta is the weird one and also keeps to herself. Last but not least is Luemma, she's the energetic one.

The Setting is an East Texan Town. It's near the wild, dense forest and swamp area called the Big Thicket The town is very small, a town with a population of less than 500 people. The neighborhoods, or communities, are very small but the people are still secure about their belongings. The schools are not that big. Everyone knows everyone.

The Point of View in the story is first person. The person telling the story is Lauren. It's basically her telling the story of hating the new girl that her Aunt Mel is taking care of. She talks about wishing Sara was dead and how much of a prostitute she has become because of her looks.

The conflict of the story is Lauren and her friends have a Séance at Robert Campion's house while her parents are out of town. Earlier that week Lauren told Sara that she wished she would go away and never come back. The candle was lit at the séance and then everyone heard a scream. When they turned on the light they found that Sara Martin had disappeared. No one knows where she has gone to or if she will even come back.

The Theme is you should never wish that someone would leave and never come back just because you get into a fight with them. Lauren wished that on Sara and Sara was kidnapped and killed. It's not cool to do that to someone that you think you don't care about.

The Plot starts off with Sara and all the other girls planning to have a séance at Roberta's. One day Sara and Lauren were fighting and Lauren told Sara that she wished she would leave and never come back. Sara told her that she should have just went all the way and wished her dead. Lauren being the cautious and safe one told her that she would never wish that on anyone. The next day at lunch Roberta let everyone know that she's only done it once. They all decided to just try to see if it would work. On the way home that day Lauren saw Sara get in the car with Sheriff Norvell and knew exactly what for. Of course she wouldn't rat her out because she had her own problems to worry about. That Friday Lauren and Sara set off for the séance. They were both nervous and both of their stomachs were in knots. They walked in and everyone was sitting in a circle on the floor. They turned off the lights and it began. Roberta lit the candle. An owl hooted and Lauren always says that when an owl hoots someone will die. All lights were off, candle lit and Roberta started humming. Roberta started talking to someone in a low voice. She said that someone last some money and Allie spoke up and said it was her. Roberta told her to consider it lost forever. Then she said that someone is having trouble with their boyfriends and Luemma and Dana giggled after almost talking at the same time. Sara then started freaking out saying that something wasn't right and there was something in the room she didn't like. She screamed and then fell on the candle. When the lights came on she was gone. They called the sheriff for help. He didn't believe a word they said. The sheriff told Aunt Mel that Sara has a mother somewhere and she told him he was crazy because she was a ward of the court. Aunt Mel told the sheriff to check around town to make sure that no boy was missing too. He said that he should be making the decisions and she asked him what he recommended and he told her that he thinks the same. So he looked but no boys were missing. Lauren was talking to Jep, one of the guys Sara like, and he said that he hasn't seen her. They were almost finished talking when the sheriff pulled up and told him to get in. He asked why and the sheriff told him that a hunter just came in from the Thicket with Sara's body in the back of his truck. Lauren freaked out and ran home telling everyone she saw on the way. A few weeks later they found out that Roberta gad been killed the same way. Sheriff took Lauren out to the Thicket. Lauren didn't like that idea too much because she thought he killed Sara. Someone knew Sara was leaving that night and locked the door behind her. Someone did let her out that night. But who was it? Read and find out.

Book Review: This book is great!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first book I've read that is by Joan Lowery Nixon. She's a great author. In The Seance, a group of seventeen-year-old's are going to hold a seance. One girl strangely disappears during the seance and is found dead - murdered - in the Thicket. When another girl from the seance is found murdered, Lauren is afraid that she's next.

This is a very exciting book and a great read. From sentence one you will be grasped and you will want to read more. This is about a young girl named Lauren who had wanted nothing to do with the s?ance her friends are having at Roberta's house. In the dark when they flick off the lights, she senses a presence of evil. As they turn on the light her friend Sara is missing but all the doors are sealed and locked from the inside. Sara's body was found the next morning in the swamp. When the second girl from the s?ance was murdered Lauren realizes she must find out what is happening or she might end up as the next victim.
This is a story that will teach you how to work with others and also to trust one another. This is a great, mysterious, intense and smart book. I recommend this book to 5th grade and up because this book might have some words that you will not know. This book is such a great book but you have to understand it.
The book is set around 1970's. This book captured my mind so fast I just could not stop. The details and the intense story line are great. I would rate this book 5/5. It was a great book and Joan Lowery Nixon has more books: The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore, A Deadly Game of Magic.
