Book Review: "Search" for a Better Book
Summary: 2 Stars
"The Search" is the first of Iris Johansen's books that I have read and most likely the last. Fortunately I borrowed it; I am certainly glad I didn't pay good money for it. I have seen some of the other reviews and it is amazing that a fair number of people really liked this book; admittedly it's escapist junk but it's not good escapist junk. The story centers around one of the most unlikable characters I've ever encountered and her wonder dog; apparently she can read his mind, which is only one of the more unbelievable aspects of the story. The rest of it deals with some sort of effort to find and either capture or kill a guy who has a vendetta against another guy who did something to the first guy a long time ago that involved a former girlfriend, wife, whatever and the dog is needed because...never mind. The protagonist whines and mopes around constantly, is unpleasant to those around her most of the time, and near the end suddenly falls into a passionate love affair with one of the guys mentioned above that isn't remotely believable. If that hasn't convinced you that this is not a very well written book, I haven't even mentioned the idiotic subplot about the romance between the dog and the wolf! Oh, and the supposedly surprise ending should be predicted by anyone with an IQ over 30. Guess by now you've figured out that I didn't like "The Search." My guess is that most of you won't either.
