Book Review: A GREAT LIGHT READ

I really loved this book and I am glad I did not read reviews here before buying. I can understand why some would find it disappointing if they thought they were getting a thriller. This book is more of a black comedy - it would be like Brigit Jones' Diary if she were even more neurotic, male, had delusions of grandeur and thought gaining acceptance to a serial killers club was cool beans because it meant someone to talk to besides yourself.
Although the plot of killing killers might seem familiar (Dexter: The First Season), it is very original. We first meet this sad young man (the kind called loser behind his back) thinking about ending his life until he is interrupted by a serial killer. Apparently, the killer is having an off day and he ends up dead instead. The man becomes curious and discovers a newspaper ad for a serial killer club. He takes over the killer's identity and becomes Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. (a misnomer). Dougie becomes the very thing he impersonated but maybe was all along. Has he found his true calling? There is plenty of social commentary as we meet several disgusting characters. The plot thickens with a federal agent who may or may not be the king of all serial killers. Many horrible thoughts, about the people around us, are put into the reader's head after reading this book.
The story, as told by the always obtuse Dougie, made me roll my eyes in spots but I soon found myself being duped too. The twist made sense. After a while, we get a more complete picture of the main character: he's very short, unattractive, has an awful taste in clothes, overly confident for no apparent reason, uncoordinated and extremely grating. Yet, he thinks he's the new best thing trying to fight the good fight. Scary.
The author does a brilliant job of creating his characters. This book is not a thrilling mystery about a whole group of deranged serial killers but more of a creepy tale of modern society and the shades of right and wrong. I highly recommend it to those who appreciate less mainstream material.
