Book Reviews of The Shack (Special Hardcover Edition)

Book Review: "The Shack"-not supported by scripture
Summary: 1 Stars

When I bought "The Shack", my intentions were to see what the draw was. I thought "Why are so many Christians loving this book?" Generally when something is a "New York Times best seller", and supposed to be "Christian" I just wonder. Considering the Truth is never widely excepted, and generally rejected and offensive to the world.

So I started to read. Trying very hard to understand why so many "Christians" rave about this book.

This book, first and foremost was a hard read in that it was poorly written. The words, and the use of them were odd and just not placed well. It was annoying to say the least. Which caused me to wonder, "This book is not a "Best Seller" based on the writing skills of the author, so there must be a draw else-ware"

And there is a draw, a big draw to the theological base of this book, or the lack thereof to be more precise.

I'll admit, seeing Eugene Peterson endorse this book, made me read with intense caution. Since he is an "emergent believer" and the writer of "The Message Bible".

So on to the book. I saw the emotional pull right away. A sad man, with a horrible tragedy, the loss of his sweet little girl. Really gets to the emotions.
Then I read on, about the end of the 4th chapter, the Bible is ripped apart. I thought this was interesting, since the reader is so emotionally involved with the main character "Mack" that they would probably just agree and move on. Yet they would read what was said, and it would go into the brain. If you get my drift.
He says that he(Mack) learned in seminary that God had stopped all communication with people. We now only to listen to and read scripture. Etc etc pg 65-66

This is an attack to ones who believe very strongly in the inerrant Word of God. Yet he implies this thought that those of us who do believe the inerrant Word of God, don't communicate with God. I do, so I don't know what "Mack" is talking about. And the Lord talks with me as well. He just won't go against His Word. We must test all things by scripture. Even "voices" we hear, angels speaking to us etc.

There are so many flaws in this book with regard to scripture.
____
Sin is not going to be punished by our Righteous and Holy God. It is it's own punishment. pg. 120
yet scripture says:

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36)

5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, (Colossians 3:5-6)

2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)
____
Jesus was not meant to copy. He is not our example. Pg 149
What of these verses then?

Imitate me(Paul), just as I also imitate Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1)

14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. (John 13:14-15)

20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us,[a] leaving us[b] an example, that you should follow His steps:
22 " Who committed no sin,
Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; (1 Peter 2:20-22)

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. (Luke 6:40)
____
"Papa" says basically there will still be tears. Implying that God never promised to take them all away. (pg. 228)

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4)
____
God will remember all our sins (this of course is saying when we are saved by faith through grace, He still remembers our sins) pg. 224

16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them," 17 then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."(Hebrews 10:16-17)

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." (Hebrews 8:12)
____
God hates order. This is evident throughout the book, so I won't be marking all the pages that imply this.

For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. (NIV 1 Corinthians 14:33)

16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.(NIV James 3:16-17)
____
Everyone is going to be saved in a sense. Pg 182 (Young puts "were" in front of a few kinds of religions, and yet puts "are" in front of another set. Making it confusing. Because some were Muslims, Mormon, etc. Yet some are bookies, bankers, Jews etc.)

18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:18)

To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins." (Acts 10:43)

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. (John 11:25)

10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the `stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.'[a] 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:10-12)
_____
I could go on an on.. There are so many other places that "The Shack" does not portray the Truth. This book is so un-Biblical. "The Shack" is meant to teach about God yet it is not supported by scripture. I would stick to the Word of God. I do believe that God's own Words to us will tell us more about Who He is, rather then a mans un-scriptural attempt.

I am saddened greatly by the love of this book by many professing Christians. But I do realize that in the Last Days "they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."(2 Timothy 4:4) And many will be "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:8)

Note: All scripture I quote is NKJV unless otherwise specified.
