Book Reviews of The Shack

Book Review: A new take on pain
Summary: 4 Stars

This book will help explain the purpose of suffering in pain - to bring you closer to Christ. It brings an entire new perspective to what you imagine God, Christ and the Holy Spirit to be. It gives you permission to connect with God without preconditions. It is a book that invites you to seek God without the fear of rejection or inadequacy.

Book Review: BEST book EVER
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful book, it is not only written well and its a great story. A must read!

Book Review: A Complete Misrepresentation of Christianity
Summary: 1 Stars

One should not judge a book by its cover, but that I did. The one reason why I picked up this item was its brilliant, awe inspiring cover followed by the subtitle - Where Tragedy Confronts Eternity.

The story is initially pleasurable; however, halfway through it the author changes the pace, taking the reader into a theology seminary. The problems, and many have expressed this, are the theological assumptions and assertions which are clearly not biblical.

This lack of consistency with Biblical facts does not bother me in the least. I found many of his ideas regarding god and who they are truthfully charming, but it's nothing that hasn't been said before - and again a complete deviation from the Biblical record.

The problem?
The book is truly a bad piece of fiction once you make peace with the fact that biblical theology does not matter. And new age, subservient theology does even less.

To those Christians who read this book and were touched by its charming story, you might want to take it to your minister or pastor and ask for a second opinion. Or you might consider becoming a Spiritualist/new age newbie.

Book Review: wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was excellent I have recommended it to my church and to many other individuals and organizations. I feel the experience that I had opened up a new demension in my life and started me thinking on a new level. I would recommend this book to anyone christian or other wise.

Book Review: Shallow but interesting
Summary: 2 Stars

Young has an interesting take on who God is. I like the personifications of God in the Shack. The book is a good primer for forgiveness and God's purposes being beyond our understanding.

But this is a primer. Suitable for Christians in Theological Grade School. It cheapens the crime (rape(?) and murder of a young girl)into a shallow Sunday School lesson, reaching for emotional buttons instead of good, deep, knowledge of the mystery of the Trinity. There are many blatant theological errors like p.120 where God says it is "not my purpose to punish it (sin)" Also p.145 where Jesus says, "Genuine relationships are marked by submission even when your choices are not helpful or healthy." This kills the whole notion of "tough love" in an attempt to help people even when you "help" will not help and your cure makes them worse. Like an addict who must hit bottom but you keep rescueing them and allowing them back into their addiction. P.206 is completely wrong in it's theology of its discussion or responsibilities and expectations.

So, good shallow book for an inside look at pain and forgiveness but don't look for your theology here. It is as much theological fiction as the actual story.
