This book is an amazing, eye-opening, heart-wrenching and poignant account of what it is like to be a "have-not" in the United States public schooling system. If you've ever wondered why minorities and the urban poor have not bridged the economic and achievement gap despite the gains of the civil rights era, you need look no further than Mr. Kozol's account of their schools. This book should be examined thoroughly certainly by the politicians who make decisions regarding educational policy at the state and Federal level and by all public educators including teachers, administrators and school board members. It is an enlightening portrait of life as an impoverished, urban, child of color and will give those who are not familiar with their plight an excellent perspective on what they must endure day after day.
