I so want Tony Hillerman's books to be fantastic!! Living in another country makes me homesick for the US...especially for all of the diversity of the country and especially for the South West.
There is something about the superficiality of these books that seems to bring disappointment. I want the characters to leap to life, like Alex Sherman's books. As a Non-native Amercian, I want to slip into the mind of Navajo and Hopi and Apache thinking and perception.
Hillerman, for me, always stays on the surface, and I often come away from his books [admittedly I have only read 3] feeling as if I were watching mind numbing television.
