Book Reviews of The Shell SeekersBook Review: Family Saga Summary: 4 Stars
This story is about Penelope growing up in the sheltering world of her artist father and young, French mother. You will share her first love with Ambrose, her true love with Richard, her most wonderful joys and her deepest heartbreak. The book wanders around significant events in her life including the turbulent WWII years.
It also brings a realistic view of two of Penelope's grown children whose only thoughts are of the money that could come from the sale of Penelope's father's painting. Also of her third child (also grown) who only wants her mother's happiness.
Penelope's prized possession,is a painting by her father. When her three children find out that the painting is worth a small fortune they each have their own ideas about what to do with it. Penelope knows all her children's faults and accepts them.
I highly recommend this story.
Book Review: Good summer read Summary: 4 Stars
I have wanted to read this book for a long time. Overall, I was pleased - some of the characters were well-defined, the story moved well and her descriptive prose absorbing. It was a bit long, though - could have been pared down by at least 100 pages. I felt the whole chapter on Richard could have been eliminated. I was hoping that Noel and Nancy would grow but they remained the same to the very end. I liked Olivia until the last chapter when she was so annoyed with Antonia's call. I felt that she, too, was very much like her sister. All three were selfish and materialistic. The whole epilepsy thing with Danius also seemed extraneous and contrived as well as the 'Hank' chapter. Good summer read, though and I did enjoy it. I wouldn't read it again, though - I wish I could see why so many reviewers were so taken by this book. Life changing though? I just don't see it.
Book Review: Good, but slow and unnecessary at times Summary: 4 Stars
To start off, this book is a masterpiece. I loved most of the characters and their trials and tribulations made me smile. But I have to say that it was extremely slow at times and also some of the descriptions were unnecessary. I thought that reading about everything the Keelings did every day for 60 years could be a little tiring. 300 pages must have described their life alone! And considering this books considerable size, I'm sure it could have been much better. Also, the story of the painting the Shell Seekers seemed only secondary, the book seemed to travel only around the Keelings- not that they were not interesting in their own right. The plot also seemed weak and disorderly at times. it doesn't mean I did not like the book. I just think it could have focused more on the story instead of just the house. I might read September, but I will wait a little while before reading anymore of Rosamunde Pilcher. This book will still come recommended by me to my friends. It's worth enjoying!
Book Review: Great for setting... Summary: 3 Stars
The setting of Cornwall in this book is brilliant, but the rest is a bit stilted. The concept of what happens to an inheritance is interesting among siblings, but does drag a bit. Read this if you'll be heading to Cornwall to gain an appreciation of the setting!
Book Review: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK Summary: 5 Stars
I HAVE READ THIS BOOK THREE TIMES, MAYBE FOUR AND KNOW I WILL READ IT MANY TIMES MORE. I HAVE A PEN-PAL IN ENGLAND AND I KEEP TELLING HER THAT HER LIFE SOUNDS LIKE PENELOPE'S IN THE SHELL SEEKERS. SHE IS EVEN TRYING TO BUY A HOUSE THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE ONE PENELOPE MOVED INTO, CONSERVATORY AND ALL!
