Book Reviews of The Shell Seekers

Book Review: Nothing is so fine as a life well lived
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite top five books I've ever read.Penelope's life and her children's spring to life from the pages. The unique relationship that she shares with each of them is entirely beleivable and absorbing. The joys, heartache and sorrows of life are so lovingly displayed, that I find myself laughing and crying out loud each time I read it. Because of R. Pilchers story,I planted Michealmas daisies in my own garden and every late summer when they come into glorious lavender, pink and purple bloom, I remember Penelopes garden and I must reread the story. Every Mother and daughter should read this and share this with each other. It will enrich your life!

Book Review: One of my all-time favorite books
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best books I've read in ages and I love re-reading it. Pilcher's stories create worlds the reader wants to settle into and stay in.

Penelope (I see her as Kate Hepburn in "Summertime") has a painting that she especially loves. Her father did it years ago, of her playing on the beach, and titled it "The Shell Seekers." Now her deceased father's paintings have become valuable. When the story begins, Penelope returns home from a hospital stay. She has released herself, feeling that she has sufficiently recovered from her heart attack. She feels an increased sensitivity to life and relationships and she's driven by a need to accomplish some final things with family and friends.

There's a great deal to be desired in her relationship with two of her children and with their relationship with each other. They want her to sell the painting and their motives are selfish.

As the story progresses, Penelope feels the need to return to her childhood home. She invites each child to go with her and each refuses for one reason or another. So she takes two cherished young friends on a pilgrimage into her past that changes their destinies. And hers.

Pilcher creates women characters who are strong and independent and at the same time feminine. Penelope doesn't need a man to help her work through her problems but when one comes along, she's gracious and kind.

This book is about values and relationships, hope and dreams, rights and wrongs. It's a delightful story that I hated to end. I wanted it to go on and on and on.

Book Review: One of my-all time favorite books
Summary: 5 Stars

A great story with believable characters. I'm re-reading it for what must be the fifth or sixth time. It's a love story but it's not maudlin; the good guys win without it being a cliche'; the dialogue is intelligent and humorous, and the settings are unforgettable. As well, the WWII history is fascinating. I feel the same way about her other novel, Coming Home.

Book Review: One of the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

The most wonderful book I have ever read. My mother-in-law spent hundreds of dollars on a painting simply because it remided her of Penelope's cottage. We wanted to be there with her. You don't know what your missing if you pass this one up!

Book Review: RICHLY, BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVED this book! There are NOT ENOUGH superlatives in my book to describe how i feel about Rosamunde Pilcher's writing in Shell Seekers! It must have taken her many thoughtful, contemplative moments before putting this wonderful family saga together! All I can say is, she is a very very RICH writer in her scenes, background descriptions, and also her colorful use of words in her sentence structure. It was HARD to put down, and I was wrapped right in to it the whole time I read!
