Book Reviews of The Shipping NewsBook Review: A complete reading experience; in a single word, memorable. Summary: 5 Stars
Proulx's The Shipping News is a truly great work of contemporary American fiction and a wonderful example of what a novel ought to be. Real people, harsh truths, a rare imagination and a superb, unusual writing style come together in this novel where the reader is transported to the symbolic Newfoundland. Proulx's metaphors are truly original and add new twists to the reader's imagination. Quoyle is a simple, unlikely hero who, like all the characters in The Shipping News, is compellingly portrayed through his efforts to untie tight, old, painful knots and replace them with new bonds of joy. We are reminded of the value of every human life, regardless of how apparently simple it may be. Ultimately we remember that happiness is the truest success and there is a Newfoundland for everybody where one can forgive, heal, discover joy and really live. Packed with insight, emotion, truth, symbolism and imagery, The Shipping News will open new doors, be a cause both for reflection and sheer enjoyment; there is something new to think about on almost every page. Proulx offers a complete reading experience that is in a single word, memorable
Book Review: A complex novel with simple truths Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best novel I've read in years. It has the richness of Faulkner and Twain but with thoroughly modern characters. It's about a man, Quoyle, who is big and awkward and unlucky in love. He moves his family to Newfoundland for reasons you'll have to discover yourself. And while he's there he discovers a simple truth about life that is maybe all we can hope for: love doesn't have to hurt. These characters will stay with you, and texture of Newfoundland is described with such richness that you'll think you've been there. Oh by the way, there's a lesbian character, but I doubt the Pulitzer committee even noticed
Book Review: A dramatic but dark comical of a man's recovered life. Summary: 2 Stars
After finding so much pain in love, Quoyle decides to get away and rediscover his life with his two kids. He meets many new people that change his life, but some things he just can't get past. This book showed promises and hardships, but it didn't interest me much. Annie Proulx used a great plot yet she put so much detail into matters that it ruined the whole point. This book has many twists and turns that make it hard to follow all the characters. Also, the author put a lot of useless information that made the storyline drag. Although I didn't enjoy the book, it is all in the perspective of the reader.

Book Review: A great book for someone undergoing a personal crisis! Summary: 4 Stars
Re-reading this book. Love the imagery, the language, the character's names, and above all the underlying message that life goes on in the face of adversity. I was inspired by the way that a man's love of his children, and quiet and assuming nature allow him to embrace life again. For someone going through a divorce, I found it inspiring!
