Book Reviews of The Shipping NewsBook Review: A true gem Summary: 5 Stars
Please bear with the first 30 odd pages; they are an anomoly to an otherwise beautifuly crafted book. This is a story that not only pulls on your heartstrings but also allows you to believe that there is hope for Everyman/woman. I love this story
Book Review: A truely amazing love story Summary: 4 Stars
This novel, although a little boring at first to me, was simply an amazing love story. Quoyle wanted to give up on love altogether, but he met an amazing woman who loved him for who he was, and he, again, believed in love. Although it was extremely difficult, he wouldn't let a shallow woman and a broken heart ruin his life. He realized that his life didn't end with the death of his wife and end of his marriage. It was simply time for him to start over, and find someone who really did love him.
Book Review: A very disappointing novel! Summary: 2 Stars
I read the Shipping News and saw the movie on tape. I still didn't get the story. I don't why this author is considered by many to be one of the best authors today. With Brokeback Mountain ready for release, I was curious about this author. While I found mixed reviews, the consensus seems to be that the stories never really have a plot or an ending. I believe it is well written and I enjoyed the characters but I felt it never completely satisfying overall. I still wanted to know what was going to happen. I am sure Proulx is a very good writer but she never really provides an ending to the audience.
Book Review: A wonderful cast of characters and delightful seascapes Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed all the characters in this wonderfully descriptive marine environment. I could feel and smell all the seascapes. One of my first fiction books in awhile and now that I read this it will turn me on to other fiction books.
Book Review: A wonderfull development of characters. Summary: 4 Stars
I have read this book in 2 or 3 times (german edition). The growth of Quoyle, his initiation to his new environment, the growth of his consciousness are fascinating but realistic. One of the best books I'have read 1996.
