Book Reviews of The Shopkeeper

Book Review: Interesting and disappointing
Summary: 4 Stars

I just read the Shopkeeper and found it to be an interesting read with some surprises and disapointments! It really got my attention after the first 25 to 30 pages. After that I read for hours not wanting to lay it down, I had to know what was going to happen next. I am like one of the other reviewers who mentions that Steve Dancy was as bad as some of the crooks he was trying to shut down. I was suprised at his cold blooded killing of the crooks. Sometimes I didn't feel the crooks were fully developed in the story and because of that it was hard to justify in my mind why he had been able to get by with the killings. But he always did.
I would like to hear a bit more on Jenny. I was greatly disturbed by the way she misled Mrs. Bolton when she wanted her to leave the ranch. I noticed that a lot in this novel. Lying and cheating to get whatever. I feel a great story could come out of Jenny as she struggles to run the ranch she is willed by her dead husband.
I didn't care for the way Steve treated Mrs Bolton even if she was a spoiled old woman. At least a little respect was in order.
I felt "The Shopkeeper" pulled me into the story in the beginning but lacked a really great ending. I did love the background of Dancy and how that came out in the story. All in all it was a good read and I will probably pick up the next one coming along by James Best.

Book Review: Seems like real people
Summary: 5 Stars

The characters in THE STOREKEEPER came across to me as if they were real people from out of my own past! I myself am an old ranch-hand and when one reads a story written like this it is almost impossible to keep your feet on the ground and accept it as something fictious - without any hesitation I give it a five and believe it deserves every star. The way James lays out his story it is as if he is spiritually in touch with another time - he tells it as if he is giving us a private peep into one of his past lives - but of course that is the sign of a great story-teller... My copy of this novel is in the form of a Kindle eBook.

Book Review: Shoot em up!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am looking forward to mnore from this author. He sets a fast pace and, at the same time, teaches us about the ways of the old west.

Book Review: Steve Dancy is More Than a Gunslinger!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Shopekeeper was a terrific read. Best does a great job of slowly revealing Steve Dancy's talents - both with the gun and with his wits, making this book more than a typical gunslinging western. The plot takes a path that is unexpected, leading us to a finish that is both expected and somewhat surprising. By combining history, wild-west adventure, and city-groomed toughness, Best has created a story that is fun and exciting to follow.

Book Review: The Bad Bad West
Summary: 3 Stars

The Shoekeeper keeps your attention and you don't want to put it down. However, the bad guys are bad and the good guy is just as bad. Sorry I cannot give Steve Dancy the title of hero. How can two wrongs make a right? By the author of "The Bluegrass Dream" and Natchez Above the River"
