Book Review: 'Stand By Me' on steroids

Sometimes I worry about Charlie Huston; a mind so full of graphic violence, mayhem, sadism, blood -lust, etc. has to worry anyone. But, keep them coming. I've read his Hank Thompson Trilogy and loved it, all the Joe Pitt novels (not so much) and am looking forward to more. While his depiction of violence can, at times, get a bit formulaic, it always proceeds along with the story.
I think Huston is just getting his literary legs and this novel shows it. He does not patronize the reader by explanations of everything, but shows the back story through the very good use of dialogue and images. Some of this was really difficult to take, but in the end there is a sort of redemption and you put down the book feeling a bit freaked out, but overall satisfied.
Give this guy a shot; if you are at all interested in experimental writing in the crime genre you'll probably like this.
