I read Charlie Huston's The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death: A Novel as part of Amazon's Vine program. I really liked Huston's writing style, especially his innovative way of writing dialogue and his electric set of characters. So I thought I'd work backwards through his catalog. That put 'The Shotgun Rule' next up on my plate.
I thought it was a good read. Yes, that's a rather tepid review. I don't have any great enthusiasm for it. I don't feel it measured up to 'The Mystic Arts...'. And I thought the ending required a rather large suspension of belief. [Though I can't really talk about it here without revealing key plot points.]
Everyone says Huston's Henry Thompson trilogy is his best work. I'm off to discover that next. I'll also put in the plug I made in my other review: I'd love a movie made of 'Mystic Arts.'
