Book Reviews of The Situation Worsens: A Box of Unfortunate Events, Books 4-6 (The Miserable Mill; The Austere Academy; The Ersatz Elevator)

Book Review: "It is atrociously unfair, of course, that the Baudelaires have so many troubles, but that is the way the story goes..."
Summary: 5 Stars

THE MISERABLE MILL: BOOK 4 - Violet, Klaus, and Sunny don't really know what they should be expecting, seeing as how they have been placed in the care of three caretakers so far, and all of them have either been crazy or ended up dead. This time, however, is different, for the three Baudelaire Orphans rarely see their caretaker - and even when they do see him, they don't really see him, for his face is always hidden behind a cloud of smoke - but rather work in his lumber factory. As if that weren't bad enough, Klaus' glasses are broken, and after a trip to the optometrist, he returns hypnotized, and begins doing strange things. Now it is up to just Violet and Sunny to solve the mystery behind Klaus' strange behavior, before it is too late, and Klaus does something awful.

THE AUSTERE ACADEMY: BOOK 5 - Over the course of a matter of months, the three Baudelaire Orphans - Violet, 14; Klaus, 12; and Sunny, a young baby - have overcome many hardships, such as the death of their beloved parents, being pursued by the money-hungry Count Olaf, and working at quite a miserable mill. Now the three Baudelaires are embarking on a new adventure, attending boarding school. Contrary to their past experiences, the three children were quite excited to attend Prufrock Preparatory School, until they saw the schools motto, "Memento Mori," which is Latin for "Remember you will die"; and met up with the evil Carmelita Spats. And, of course, meeting crazy Vice Principal Nero and being forced to listen to him play the violin - badly, I might add - for six hours every night, was quite trying in it's own way. However, the Baudelaires made the best of it, for they had the companionship of the Quagmire Triplets - Duncan and Isadora, the third person born with them had since died. Everything is fine - except for the occasional ridiculousness of Sunny being Vice Principal Nero's secretary, and facing the challenge of making her own staples - until Count Olaf arrives in the disguise of Coach Genghis, the most wonderful Coach in the entire world, and begins wreaking his havoc upon the three Baudelaires once more.

THE ERSATZ ELEVATOR: BOOK 6 - It is not easy being an orphan, and this bit of information is best known by the three Baudelaire Orphans, Violet (14), Klaus (12), and Sunny (an infant), as they have experienced life as orphans ever since their beloved parents were killed in a mysterious fire, which left them in the care of various crazy relatives. However, perhaps no relatives are like Jerome and Esme Squalor, for they are truly one of a kind. Esme is overly obsessed with what's in and what's out, and insists on doing only the "in" things. Hence, the elevator is removed from her posh apartment building, as elevators are so out, and the poor Baudelaire's are forced to walk up over 50 flights of stairs. Then there's Jerome, who is quite the kind man, if only he weren't so much of a pushover, as he finds arguing to be a hassle, and does only what others tell him to. Yet life with the Squalor's isn't terrible. That is, until Count Olaf shows up again, and the Orphans realize that their missing friends, the Quagmire Triplets, could be close by, and surely need their help.

After reading the first three books in Snicket's A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS collection, I had doubts that the series would be able to become even better. However, in THE SITUATION WORSENS collection, Snicket proved me wrong. THE SITUATION WORSENS features three of the most miserable books in the series, that will capture the attention of readers young and old, and keep them begging for more once they've gobbled these three up. Snicket keeps the misery coming, and misery keeps readers coming back for more. Accompany the Baudelaires as they delve deeper into the misery they call their lives.
