Book Review: A multi-faceted book
Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those cookbooks that one can pick up to find a great recipe or simply to read, with equal satisfaction. Many of the recipes are fresh twists on old standards, such as the
*Pan-Fried Deviled Eggs on French Lettuces (why didn't I ever think of this?), or
*Crisp Cucumber Shrimp in Retro Goddess Dressing, or
*21st Century Mac 'n Cheese (saints be praised and I'm not even Catholic); others, like the
*Cambodian Noodle Soup with Pineapple and Tomato, are a little bit out there.
But most offer either intense flavor explosions, such as the trio of green bean recipes, or winning flavor combinations, as in the
*Oven Roasted Chicken Cacciatore and
*Pork Tenderloin Pan Roast with Black Olives and Oranges.
Equally commendable are the little extras thrown in - the tidbits of tips, interesting side stories, and recommendations for building a great cookbook library - that make the book a multi-faceted delight for those who like reading about food as much as they enjoy cooking it.
The book is beautifully designed and very well organized and, although the layout is not standard for a cookbook, it manages to avoid the pitfall of form-over-function to which overly-designed books often fall victim. It deserves a spot on every cookbook collector's shelf.
