Book Reviews of The StormholderBook Review: A Delightful and Fun Fantasy Read Summary: 4 Stars
Since the publication of Harry Potter, the literary market has been flooded with books about boy wizards and their magical exploits to save the world. Although sharing the same literary soil as Harry Potter, The Stormholder by Tricia Boone and Melissa Thomas is a welcome addition to the world of wizardry and Young Adult fantasy.
In The Stormholder, Jack and Katie Freeman live the lives of the average suburbanite kids unaware that events are soon to befall them that will change their lives forever. One night after returning from a soccer game, the kids discover that their parents are missing. Through their own recognizance, they discover a secret door in their house which transports them to a magical world called August. There they meet an eclectic collection of strange creatures: gophtrolls, Scottish giants, faitherlings, elves, mermaids, wizards, and not a few hostile ones as well such as the insult-spewing knockabouts. However, August is plagued by a terrible magical entity called the hevels and Jack and Katie soon learn that they are destined to help defeat this menace. Along the way, the children will uncover the shocking truths of their pasts in their coming-of-age quest.
The Stormholder is a quite fun and stirring read with plenty of magic and adventure filling its pages. There is no lack of humor and I found myself laughing out loud not a few times to myself as I read this book. The authors have done a fine job telling a story that children and young people will care about. The Stormholder will also charm and bedazzle its share of adults along the way as well. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good magical romp. A storm is brewing. Are you ready for the adventure?
