Book Review: 'Sawtelle' is a must-read AND a must-re-read!

From the very beginning of the book all the way through the adventure of young Edgar, I absolutely adored this book. Whether it be because I have a connection with dogs myself or because I'm just an animal lover in general. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a great read for anyone at any reading level - it can be understood by everyone and anyone.
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle describes the life of a young boy, born mute, only speaking sign. He lives with his two parents who run a dog kennel, breeding their own breed of dogs, Sawtelle dogs. Shortly after the story begins, Edgar's uncle, Claude, comes to live at the farm. Upon his father's sudden death, Edgar becomes stricken with grief but believes that Claude has something to do with the death of his father. He makes a plan to prove it, but the plan ends up backfiring completely, leaving Edgar running into the wild with three dogs that follow him. After enduring his rite of passage in the wild, Edgar's love for the dogs and the need to uncover the truth about his father send him home.
Wroblewski's writing is absolutely phenomenal, and I love the style he chose with occasionally writing from the dog's point of view as well. I adore the plot, I adore the story, I adore the book. Wroblewski's writing mesmerized me from the first page. The poetic word-craft is always a plus for me. I give this book a 5-star! And it's not just for people who love dogs, frankly, because anyone could easily love this book, I think. Like I said, you don't have to be a scholar to understand this book. The characters were inspiring, and I found the closeness of the Sawtelle family touching. I can't wait to pick it up again, because it's a book that I plan to read over and over again for years to come!
