Book Review: A Good Start

This is a very good place to start for someone new to the history of the English language. It popularizes the topic, and makes it readily accessible to novices. I recommend it highly.
For someone interested in a much more comprehensive, and more analytical approach, I recommend "The Stories of English," by David Crystal. It too is a wonderful book. (And I can't help but wondering if Crystal's title was chosen as a rebuttal to McCrum.)
