Book Review: Juicy family tale

This book had me gasping with incredulity. Isabel's true story of her extended family is extraordinary- worthy of a melodramatic soap opera- it has it all- drugs, gay marriage, blatant matchmaking, painful divorce, adoption, abandonment, death. Isabel tells it all with disarming honesty and great humour. The story peters out a little in the second half- but that is what real life is like. Either it went through a quiet patch or there were things the author could not write about. But she comes blazing back and informs the reader in the final pages that there was at least one colourful central character she had to leave out, and rewrite, as he didn't want to be mentioned. I myself have written a memoir, so know how hard it is to write the truth about one's family without hurting people. Isabel does it extremely well and laces the highs and lows of her 'tribe', as she calls them, with great love and her vivid down-to-earth writing style. A great, warm, inspiring read.
