Book Review: "Evil doesn't die"

Tess Gerritsen's serial killer is as evil as they come. He chloroforms women and carries out a horrific fantasy involving surgery. The victims don't survive his scalpel.
All but one.
The only survivor is a doctor, Catherine Cordell. During her ordeal she managed to get a hand free to shoot and kill the killer.
The trouble is, the killer won't stay dead. Crimes just like those committed in Atlanta and Savannah are suddenly happening in Boston, near where Dr. Cordell is now living and working. The press nicknames him The Surgeon.
The homicide unit includes two quite interesting detectives. Jane Rizzoli is a powder keg, infuriated and embittered by the sexist behavior of male cops, but a brilliant investigator. Thomas Moore (nicknamed Saint Thomas) always gets his man. But he never swears, never loses his cool - and never steps over the line.
Except when he falls in love with Doctor Cordell.
Cordell is a totally satisfying character - a victim who fights back, a heroic trauma surgeon who saves accident victims with appalling injuries. Her ER scenes are high drama peppered with esoteric medical jargon. Gerritsen, a physician herself, makes it very real.
This thriller is not for the faint of heart. At the same time, it's an absorbing police procedural, and the love interest adds depth. I'd recommend it to readers with a high tolerance for dread and violence.
