Book Reviews of The TalismanBook Review: A good book from a good collection Summary: 5 Stars
I first read this book and then I followed up by listening to the novel on audio book. The error I made initially was to read Black House before this book. But by making this error, as I am sure that many others have, is that it prepared me for the great adventures that would involve the books main character, Jack Sawyer. This book has many highs and lows, but overall it is a good book. There was a point in the book, when it enters the "Wolf" chapters that I was scratching my head as to whether continue reading or not. (I prefer a serious believable plot vs fantasy). I convinced myself to continue reading, which I knew I would do anyways, and found this segment of the book to be the best and most heart chasing portion. This book offers great battles, failures and victories. There is nothing better in my opinion than entering into a SAGA with a great book like this that prepares you for many books to come. This book is the first of a SAGA, but in many ways, it is not. This novel proceeds "Black House" and prepares you for the "Dark Tower Series I, II, III, IV, & the soon to be released V", but actually was released after most of the above referenced novels. As you will read, this novel is maybe more of a Side Step in Time. For reasons like these, most of us Stephen King readers and fans understand that when Stephen King writes one book, it surely will have future or past consequences in another novel written by him. Final word to you, if you are wondering whether to make the leap into the "Territories" is this, the book is great, the upcoming novels, the side step novels and everything to do with the "Dark Tower Series" are great, but be prepared, there is much confusion, and many challenges, and there are great mysteries involved. Many readers may give up too quickly, but I assure you, if you like a good book/SAGA, this is a good book and a good starting point.
Book Review: A great book...right here and now. Summary: 5 Stars
When I first began this book I was a little disappointed. Up until Part 2: The Road Of Trials, the book is kinda boring. Right when Jack flips for the first time the book becomes an incredible adventure story. I loved all of the characters...Morgan Sloat/Morgan of Orris, Sunlight Gardener/Osmond, Richard Sloat, Jack Sawyer, Wolf, and everybody. The only two parts I didn't like were the whole Part 1, and Chapter 34-35. It's not that they [were bad], they were just kinda slow. I highly recommend this book.
Book Review: A great epic tale - one I will read over and over again. Summary: 5 Stars
A Stephen King fan must-read. This is more than a novel. It's an epic tale. This one hits home in the same way that The Stand and the Dark Tower series does. I fell into this tale of Jack Sawyer as he journeyed between worlds in an effort to save his dying mother. I fell in, like Alice down the rabbit hole, and I just never wanted to find my way back out. If you read Stephen King and enjoyed his writing style, you'll love this one just as much. Peter Straub injects a fresh perspective and together they keep you captivated. I recommend this book to those who love King's other epic tales. Also recommended to those who enjoy a good fantasy-turned-mainstream.
Book Review: A great pairing Summary: 5 Stars
While this is a departure for both authors, the mixture of styles is both perfect and exciting. From page one until the end, you will be immersed in Jack's world.
Book Review: A long freaking book Summary: 2 Stars
The Talisman was a book that was written for people who like fantasy. This is not a darn horror novel. The book starts out boring and get's good when the character Wolf comes in. The hero of the book Jack was not a character I liked. When it came time to read about him most of the time I was bored out my brain. Stephen King couldn't have written this book, it seems like Peter Straub wrote the bulk or this wordy book. A lot of the descriptions were not needed and 735 pages was not worth it. I liked reading about the character's Twinners. I also liked reading about Lily, Morgan sloat and Sunlight Gardner. I was dissappointed in Stephen King. This book took me 2 1/2 months to read and I won't be reading the sequel.
