Book Review: A Challenging, But Ultimately Satisfying Read

One of my college literature professors told me you had to give a novel at least 75 pages before deciding to give up on it. Obviously this advice probably applies less to the latest thriller, beach or airplane book, but it applies very aptly to this historical mystery based in the frozen north country of 19th century Canada.
The central element all the novel's stories revolve around is the murder of a reclusive trapper. Who would want to murder someone like that and why? Not all questions get answered in this novel, but that seems in keeping with the realistic style in which the story is told.
Once I became more familiar with the characters and the language used, I began to understand more of what was going on and became more interested. The structure of the story is both fascinating and confusing, but I found the puzzle worth figuring out.
What is "the tenderness of wolves?" It is the tenderness of animals who won't kill you, but will eat you once you are dead; who will eat your body, but leave traces of you to be found by anyone who comes looking. In the setting of this novel, this is perhaps the only kind of tenderness that can be expected.
