Book Review: "Everyone is a suspect."

On his way to school one day, 11-year-old Billy Williams is handed his death in the subway--a bomb concealed in a package. Following his death, his family (Americans living in London, England)--as well as the city--are on guard and afraid. His 16-year-old sister, Laura Williams, who becomes the main character of the book, obsesses over this terrorist act, thinking: "What if Billy's killer was somebody at school? Somebody right here at L.I.A. [London International Academy]?" And so begins her investigation into her brother's tragic death.However, the book kind of detours from her quest about halfway through, when one of Laura's Moslem girl friends begs her to help her run away from her strict family. Yet "The Terrorist" is just as gripping and realistic as some of Cooney's other books, like her Janie series (which I really liked). It has a great deal of impact on everyone since it focuses on global terrorism, a topic that has been rampant in the news for a long time.
But aside from the serious part of the story, "The Terrorist" is a good intro to English culture--as well as other cultures--as seen through the eyes of an American family. It's a very insightful and fast-paced book (I read it in one day), though the bad guy is kind of obvious. Recommended to Cooney fans.
