Book Review: Disappointing.
Summary: 2 Stars
Arthur Holmberg is clearly too much of a fan of Robert Wilson to be able to say anything genuinely interesting. Although he offers a reasonable outline of Wilson's approach to theatre, he's unable to be truly critical, ignores anything in Wilson's work that suggests contradictions, inconsistencies or short-comings, and blatantly side-steps any productions that don't fit the author's very particular view. Even the language used becomes increasingly sycophantic to the point where one begins to think that the book is more of a love-letter to a theatrical style than an analyisis of a director.Which is a shame, because Wilson is an interesting and complex (if often questionable) director and his work raises many issues about theatre practice in the 21st Century.
Some nice pictures, though.
