Book Review: From Excellent to Bad
Summary: 2 Stars

Although Cornelia Funke's other books, such as Inkheart, have all been strongly written and excellent reads, I have come to find that The Thief Lord is rather disappointing and lacking. First, about the book:

There are actually two story lines in the book. The first and main storyline concentrates on Bo and Prosper, two brothers who have run away to Venice, in hopes of escaping the aunt that wants to adopt Bo (and thus separate the two brothers). In Venice they meet a group of other orphan/runaway children and the mysterious 'thief lord' who provides for the homeless children.

The second story line focuses on Victor, the detective who has been hired by Bo and Prosper's aunt to find them after they ran away. The chapters devoted to Victor are centered around his attempts to find the siblings.

So why the two star rating? The book starts out very strongly. Characters are well developed, the story is well paced, and the book is able to provide enough suspense to keep the reader going. But the last 1/3 of the book completely brings down the well written, well planned beginning and middle of the story. Minor characters suddenly pop up and become huge villains without a real reason. The story, altogether rather realistic, becomes suddenly magic filled. Okay, so maybe it doesn't sound that bad. But the book's biggest fault: the ending is not satisfactory. As I've mentioned before, magic suddenly becomes a big part of the story about 2/3 of the way through. And suddenly, all the conflicts and problems that have been built up through the story are suddenly solved by magic. Poof! Abracadabra! The last bit of the book is simply not good enough to match the well written beginning and middle.

Even so, this book is probably a good read for pre-teens who enjoy a decent (though not brilliant) adventure book. Go ahead and read it, but buying The Thief Lord is really not necessary.

Book Review: An action-packed, exciting, gripping book
Summary: 5 Stars

In the Thief Lord, Prosper and Bo are on the run from their cruel and selfish Aunt Esther and Uncle Max. Esther and Max despise Prosper but are very fond of little Bo. Esther and Max want to send Prosper away to a boarding school. Bo and Prosper hate this idea and decide to run away to the magical land of Venice. Prosper is a serious teenager who really cares about his little brother. Prosper is helpful and friendly. Before Prosper and Bo's mother died they lived a normal life. They grew up hearing their mother's enchanted story's about Venice, Italy. Venice turns out to be a big town full of alleys, canals and statues of winged lions and enchanted animals. Their only problem is that they are all alone without a home, money or food. But they meet the Thief Lord. The Thief Lord takes Prosper and Bo to a shut down movie theater called the Stella. Prosper and Bo then meet Hornet, Mosca and Riccio. What happens when Prosper and The Thief Lord find out about legendary merry ground? You will have to read the book to find out! This book takes place in modern time. The theme of this book would be good verse evil. I liked this book a lot because of its thrilling plot. It's the perfect book to read on a cold, frosty winter night.

Book Review: Best book ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read the book when I was eight years old. I am now ten years old and I have read it twice. The story is about two orphans who run away to Venice and meet a mysterious boy who calls himself the Thief Lord. They go on an amazing adventure. I immediately liked the Thief Lord's character. He is cunning and daring. You will like this book if you enjoy mystery, humor, strong characters, and learning about new places. The Thief Lord is a great book and you can read it over and over again without it losing its amazing quality.

Book Review: Satisfying story
Summary: 5 Stars

Did you ever fantasize about being on your own when you were a kid? Not having to go to school? Imagine you and your friends having a hideout with a bathroom with running water!! What else could you ask for?

Some homeless boys find shelter in a movie theater. It's more like a hideout actually. They're not desperate and unfortunate, they're more like street urchins. A "Thief Lord" brings them items that 'he steals' and the kids bring them to a pawn shop to exchange for money. That's how they buy their food (and books).

Some of the kids want to become like the Thief Lord, until they get tangled up with some adults and the Thief Lord's identity is broken.

Villanous adults are actually kids at heart. This is a playful, uplifting story. No heartache, no issues. A little bit of fantasy.

Some of my 6th graders had enjoyed the book, I had to check it out.
