Book Reviews of The Thief LordBook Review: Good beginning, mediocre end Summary: 3 Stars
The Thief Lord is a story of two brothers, Bo and Prospero. Fearing that their aunt will separate them from each other, they ventured into Venice, a place where many stories were told by their dead mother. This novel by Cornelia Funke provides a good beginning, as Bo and Prospero make their way in the old-time Venice. They meet a number of interesting and colorful characters, and became part of an unlikely gang of "thieves." The twists and turns in the middle proved to be as excellent as the beginning. A major flaw of the story lies in the end. Probably in the course of Funke's writing, she lost track of what the plot is really all about. Towards the end, readers will be surprised in the strange event that will occur. Furthermore, the "magic vehicle" will make the readers feel that there should have been more. The Thief Lord is well written and can be an enjoyable read. However, readers must not expect the likes of Artemis Fowl or Harry Potter. As much as the book attempted to weave fantasy and reality, Cornelia Funke failed.
Book Review: Good book, weird ending Summary: 4 Stars
I thought this was an amazing book! It is about a boy named Prosper and his little brother named Bo. They run away from their aunt who wants to separate them. They go to Venice, Italy, the place their mother told them about before she died. There they meet a group of runaways that live in an abandoned movie theater. This book by Cornelia Funke grabbed my attention right away. The author is so descriptive you feel as if you are there with them. The only part of the book that I disliked was how the author tries to bring so much fantasy in at the end. I mean, the merry-go-round that can make you younger or older just by riding it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the book. It is pretty believable up until that chunk of fantasy at the last minute. I think this book would have been better if it had stuck to one genre throughout the book. It is OK to put realistic with adventure or mystery, but realistic and fantasy do not go well together.
Book Review: Good imagination Summary: 5 Stars
The Thief Lord is about a band of orphans who run around causing trouble. Bo and Prosper are the main characters. They runaway from their aunt and uncle and run into the orphans. Bo and Prosper decide to join the orphans. The title character, the Thief Lord, only comes out at night and has a terrible dark secret. Will Bo and prosper or any of the orphans find out why the Thief Lord only comes out at night? There's only one way to know for certain. Read the book.
Through the book you will find that Bo and Prosper are regular kids who runaway from their aunt and uncle because they want more in life. Bo and Prosper really have no goals, except to not get caught when causing trouble. If anybody is caught they'll go straight to the orphanage. The author Cornelia Funke makes the characters seem real and interesting to me because Bo and Prosper will do anything to fit in the group.
Book Review: Good story Summary: 5 Stars
Thief Lord is a favorite in our house! I loved this too and read it in a matter of a few hours. It catches you and you feel like you are pulled right into the story.
