Book Reviews of The Thief LordBook Review: Great book Summary: 5 Stars
I really like how the Thief Lord is an adventure story. It has lots of action and lots of mystery. I think The Thied Lord should be known all around the United States. It's a good book to help your mind learn how you feel sometimes.

Book Review: Great book but not so great ending Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book quite a lot. I had read some decent-to-great reviews of it, saw it in the bookstore, and bought it. I was not disappointed BUT thought the ending was quite rushed and left some things hanging while other things were solved with too much contrivance.Prosper and Bo are two brothers, aged 12 and 5 respectively, who have run away from an aunt & uncle to Venice. Their late mother had told them stories all their lives about how wonderful the city was and, being miserable with the aunt, they go there to live. They meet a small group of other 'strays' and begin to live with them, surviving through pickpocketing and theivery, most of which is done by their leader, The Thief Lord. The book is well written (and well translated) but there was something unsatisfying about the last 1/4 of the book. It was still enjoyable but when I finished the last page, I was left with a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if she plans on writing a sequel in the future (although her next book, already out, is not a sequel to this one) and therefore wanted to leave some cliffhangers. If that is the case, the cliffhangers are a weird form of such that I have never read before. Anyway, a nice enjoyable book with some morals to be had ("be careful what you wish for as it might come true" is the main one that I saw), not much violence, and some very enjoyable characters.
Book Review: Great book!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Two orphans Prosper and Bo run away from their cruel aunt and uncle and find themselves living on the streets of Venice, Italy with three other orphans. Scipio, who calls himself the "Thief Lord", takes care of children. While in Venice they discover two very mysterious things.
Over time you get to know the characters really well. There's Hornet, she's about 12 years old. They all call her Hornet because she always where's her hair in one long braid, and it looks like a stinger on a hornet. She likes helping people, and has lots of good ideas. There's Bo, and Riccio. They're the youngest of the group, Bo is about 5 years old, and Riccio is about 6. Bo loves being involved in stealing in they have to, or adventures. He wants to be just like just like the thief lord when he grows up. Riccio sometimes gets mad easily, but only sometimes. He's also very adventurous. Prosper and Mosca are the oldest boys in the group. They're about 12 years old. Mosca reminds me of a strong, smart person. He seems to always take things the right way. Prosper is Bo's older brother. He takes care of Bo very well and never lets him out of sight. Prosper is a very strong person on the inside. I like his personality the best. He's very nice and you seem to take a liking to him. All together it's a very good group of kids.
Cornelia Funke, the author has written about three other books, Dragon Rider, InkHeart, and InkSpell. This is for sure one of my favorite books. I would recommend this book to middle schoolers, who like realistic fiction with a little fantasy. You should definitely read it soon because the movie is coming out in March!
Book Review: Great read even for an adult Summary: 4 Stars
I picked this book up, not realizing that it was a children's book. It was only when I got it home and was reading the cover that I saw that Ms. Funke was a writer of children's books. But Venice is one of my favorite cities and the writing level was obviously aimed at a high enough level that I didn't particularly feel that I was reading a children's book so I continued.
I was happily surprised as I read this book. It seems rare these days that you can find a novel that holds your interest, let alone one that is written for children that an adult can enjoy. The descriptions of Venice are simply stunning. The characters are intensely believable (Except maybe Aunt Esther).
No, the novel isn't infused with magic like Harry Potter, but there is just enough at the end to make the novel sparkle. To tell what the magic is about would spoil the plot, but it certainly made me stop and think if I would make the same choices as some of the characters in the book.
I do wonder about some of the children's books that are out these days. They certainly aren't all sweetness and light. This one deals with some pretty harsh subjects of street children, unloved/unwanted children, and crime. I Definitely would not recommend this for the very young reader.
My star ratings:
One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.
Five stars - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.
