Book Review: a good read - flawed but definitely an author to watch

I'd read a lot about this wunderkind author - first book published when still in his teens and this one when he was a 21-year-old student. This immediately made me want to see what one so young was capable of, although I was wary of judging the author and not the book; I believe the book should be judged on its own merits.
It's a good read; the author writes well and the story is well-researched, well-paced and an interesting one. I do have some criticisms, though: the story is divided into two parts; the first takes place when the narrator is sent to Bangkok on a journalistic mission, while the second deals with events on his return to New York during and immediately after 9/11. Both sections are good in their own right, yet I had the unmistakeable feeling that the link between them wasn't as good as it might have been. It seemed as though there were two separate books trying to get out but the author didn't quite have enough material or inspiration to develop each part into a full novel. Without giving too much away, in the Bangkok section the narrator makes a discovery about his family which I thought would have been explored and developed in the second part, but it wasn't followed up. Similarly, the New York section was interesting enough to have been developed into a full-length, post 9/11 novel.
Those criticisms aside, McDonnel can most definitely write well and I'll be reading his first novel now. I also look forward to reading what else he might produce as he develops and matures as a writer. One to watch and a book worth reading, for all my quibbles.
