Book Review: Compelling Characters and Story
Summary: 5 Stars
The large Catholic Cleary family is scraping by in New Zealand when Paddy Cleary, the patriarch, is invited by his extremely wealthy and mean older sister to live on her sheep ranch in Australia. The family jumps at the opportunity to gain security and the promise that they will inherit the property when the sister dies.
From the moment they arrive, the local priest, Ralph de Bricassart, is taken with ten-year-old Meggie, the only girl in the family. He treats her like a treasured daughter, dotes on her, and as she gets older and older, denies that he is as deeply in love with her as she as with him.
The forbidden love between Meggie and Ralph affects not just the two of them, but the next generation as well, as Meggie tries valiantly to forget the priest and make a life for herself and her children that is happier than her own childhood.
I loved the characters in this novel and the tragic circumstances in which Meggie and Ralph found themselves. The setting was as fascinating as the characters, and I looked forward to each section that highlighted a different member of this family.
