Book Reviews of The Thorn BirdsBook Review: This is my 2nd copy in 5 years! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my 1st copy of The Thorn Birds 5 years ago. It was a smaller paperback, and its a book I read every year. When I bought it, it was 2nd-hand, and had seen many readings before I had it. This year, after the years it had spent with me, it finally fell apart, past the point of all repair. So, I invested in a new copy. I grew up watching the mini-series, and since high school I've read the book about every year. Its a timeless classic, and a story I've loved most of my whole life! Few stories have come so vividly alive like this one has, both on the page of a book and on film.
Own this book, read this book! You won't be disappointed!
Book Review: Very beautiful and very intricate Summary: 5 Stars
I think this is a very beautiful and intricate novel. It has so much detail about the surroundings and the people. It takes you deep into the lands and the motivations and feelings of the characters. I savored every bit about the description of life in the land down under and the land of the long white cloud.
The characters were intricately spelled out. The love affair between the priest and Meggie was an unexpected development. Even without it, the book would have been a true delight rich in detail about decades now past.
Highly recommended for anyone with a nostalgia for old times and a love of rich, moving and detailed descriptions brimming with a fresh humanity.
Book Review: don't have any patience to move on Summary: 3 Stars
***possible spoiler***
I watched the movie first, and was then drawn to read the book. I don't mean to blame D.H. Lawrence, but it was his "Lady Chatterley's Lover" that I read first before "the Thorn Birds", which makes the latter so pale and kind of superficial. I mean the author is actually very great, and is very gifted in writing, but it just doesn't catch my heart. I don't care about what happened in the book. Maybe that's very weird (my fault), but my suggestion would be, never read any great authors before 'fast food' literatures.
