Book Review: A Beautiful Spirit

The Time of My Life by Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi, begins with Patrick telling how he found out he had pancreatic cancer, the range of emotions he experienced, and the determination to fight.
Growing up in Texas as the son of a self-made man, and a teacher/choreographer, Patrick was the second of five children. He was also a dare-devil at times, and full of energy, until a serious high school football injury threatened to end his dreams of becoming a dancer or sports figure. With the rugged grit that he is now known for, he fought through the painful injury, and recovered to become one of the most famous actor/dancers of our time.
Life was not always easy for this beautiful spirit, as you will read in this book, but in the end, I believe he became one of our own super-heroes. Told with grace, humor, and honesty, this is a must read for anyone who was touched by his brilliant life and career. It is sad that he didn't get to live to see its publication, but as he had said, he lived many lives in just this one, a life lived to its fullest.
He was a fine man and we will miss him.

"The Time of My Life" is a well-written and beautiful book. Knowing that Patrick died before I ordered the book made it all the more heartbreaking to read. I tried to read as slow as possible to avoid getting to the end. I wanted it to go on forever. I felt more hopeful about my own life after learning about some of Patrick and Lisa's struggles and how they had the strength and creativity to overcome them. Reading in their own words how much they loved each other gave me the desire to strengthen my own relationship. I can't recommend this book enough. You will have a vast amount of respect and empathy for Lisa and feel like you truly knew Patrick after reading it. Patrick Swayze will be sorely missed, not just because he was handsome or a famous actor, but because he was genuine and had a big heart. I really enjoyed this book. I love knowing that I read it just the way he wanted it told. I can't help but feel that he wanted to 'say' so much more in it, but what was written was nice. I was never a huge Patrick Swayze fan. I did appreciate his work, but Mr. Swayze was somebody my parents liked and could relate to. So, when he got sick with his cancer, I began to research his life, projects, and movies. Once I got to know this man, I was hooked. When his book came out, I purchased it and could not put it down. Trust me, I'm not a book person at all, but it was an easy read and a very interesting read. It was written from Patrick's point of view. It is very positive and refreshing to read about Mr. Swayze talking about all of the things he loved about life. A must read, Swayze fan or not!
