Book Review: Better than some other Crime Fiction - very personal

I always appreciate an author who is willing to use real-life events to backdrop a story or to actually play a part in it. For this reason Burke's Tin Roof Blowdown gets my vote; taking a true natural disaster scenario (in this case Hurricaine Katrina) from the recent past and turning into a tale of psychopaths, mobsters and thugs could have been highly controversial - I mean, if you think of the tsunami in South-East Asia you don't necessarily think of fictionalising it. However, the dark, murky and nightmarish destruction of New Orleans provides a realistic backdrop AS WELL AS a striking metaphor for the narrative of this book. Metaphor is very important in this novel because the tone suggests a personal anger and frustration in Burke relating to the aftermath of Katrina and perhaps even wider issues in American society. If you don't read it for these reasons then read it because it is a reasonably well-written example of mainstream crime fiction; Dave Robicheaux returns once again as do most structural / narrative elements of the genre and gives this book 3.5 Stars, but given the personal tone and intelligent metaphors we can bump it up to 4. All in all, to the general reader this may well be just *another* crime fiction novel - but it is a cut above many others out there..
