Book Reviews of The Tomb (Adversary Cycle/Repairman Jack)Book Review: REVENGE IS SWEET Summary: 5 StarsRevenge may not be politically correct, but it sure is entertaining. I'm a new addition to the legion of Repairman Jack fans. When I was about half-way through this book, I knew I would suffer withdrawal pains at the end, so I ran out and bought Legacies, the 2nd Repairman Jack novel. Try it, you'll like it!
Book Review: You'll always come back to the classics Summary: 5 StarsWell, these comments certainly won't change the overall ratings for this book. I first read Tomb shortly after it was published and seem to always have an old paperback copy around. This tale had an excellent combination of attributes that made it a winner: good historical intro, the tough (but real) hero and his love interest, believable monsters (as monsters go), and a worthy human adversary. What really clicked here, however, was the pacing of the story and the suspense. Wilson let the reader know enough to build interest (RJ's background) and let the secrets out as needed (Rakosh, elixir). Everything in the story was fresh. The real trick now will be to see how the next RJ story, Legacies, works. Sequels need to show you something new along with the familiar. In moviedom, that's why Aliens works and US Marshals fails. I've checked out Legacies and now begin to read...
Book Review: Coming Home Summary: 5 StarsI first met Repairman Jack way back in the 80's. F Paul Wilsonhad contributed a short story to an anthology that I cannot rememberand always hoped to find again, just for the RJ piece. The way RJ calmly handles his adversaries making it look so easy, only for us to find out later how stressful these moments of danger and darkness can be. This vulnerability makes him so much more real. I read and have copies of the F Paul Wilson series (that did not start out as a series) and it will always be one of my favourite collections. However, the pieces with RJ (The Tomb and Nightworld) are especially dear to me. Even if the RJ inclusion in Nightworld was only as a "guest-star". If I ever read just selections from the series, it will be those two. I am surprised that Wilson took so long to acknowledge and capitalise on the RJ popularity, but I am glad he has. My only fear is, how well he will be able to maintain the mystery and excitement of the character. Legacies had its moments, but the ending seemed a little lack-lustre without the usual RJ flair for a climatic ending. However, as most fans go (ask Stephen King) we will buy it an read once it keeps coming.I believe this version of The Tomb is a re-touched one and not the original, but however it comes, The Tomb will be unputdownable.
Book Review: Repairman Jack - a hero for the the new Millenium from 1984 Summary: 5 StarsI bought this book after seeing Legacies on sale at my local bookstore. The Repairman Jack character intrigued me. I find it amazing that The Tomb was originally written in 1984. The characters seem so fresh. I enjoyed the story which was able to incorporate elements from so many different genres. Repairman Jack is a unique and intriguing, yet believable character. Wilson is able to give us a character that we can be comfortable with, a real person but with a very disturbing, mysterious past. He gives us just enough knowledge about Jack to make him one of us, but keeps enough of Jack's pasts and secrets to intrigue us. I recommend this book to anyone who has always wanted a good adventure, detective, horror, story incorporated into one novel. I hope there are many more Repairman Jack novels in the works - I for one am a big fan. Read this book then all of Jack's adventures - you will NOT be disappointed. Since I've read this book I've read everything I could get my hannds on that F. Paul Wilson wrote. He is one of the most under-rated authors in fiction today.
Book Review: Wilson continues to intrigue me. Summary: 5 StarsThis is the first book I've read in Mr. Wilson's Adversary Cycle. As a great lover of his medical thrillers (The Select, Sibs, Implant, etc.), I was still entralled with this storyline. It was difficult for me to get into the story in the beginning, but after a couple of chapters, the excitement began! This is an excellent horror story and I was imagining those demons right there with me as I read the book. I am anxiously looking forward to reading the "sequel", LEGACIES, when it comes out in paperback!
