This is truly an amazing book and if you have muscle problems it will change how you deal with them. It got me relief and an understanding of the muscle works and what it takes to relive muscle pain.
Book Review: Clair Davies et al. should be canonized Summary: 5 Stars
If you suffer from mysterious and FRUSTRATING chronic musculoskeletal pain and are at your wit's end (like I was), ORDER THIS BOOK NOW. This book SAVED ME by helping put an end to about 4 months of "unexplained" pain in my thighs, knees, buttocks and hips. I had spent hundreds of $$ getting x-rays, MRI's, bone scans, and seeing numerous physicians as well as a physical therapist, chiropractor, and a naturopath. None had a clear expanation of what was causing me so much pain for such a long time. I was prescribed massive doses of ibuprofen (which did nothing but ruin my stomach) as well as Valium, Flexeril, Elavil, and finally Prozac. I tried various supplements including potassium, magnesium and B vitamins, but they didn't seem to do anything. I was completely unable to exercise as it made the pain much worse..at times I was unable to walk a couple blocks. I finally got this book last week and realized that little "knots" in my muscles were the source of all this grief. No wonder nothing else (physical therapy, diet, medication) worked! With the book I figured out that I had at about ~10 trigger points in my buttocks/thighs, some which were EXTREMELY painful to massage. Since it was so painful i was a bit skeptical at first but I stuck with it. I began to massage with a tennis ball several times a day. Some trigger points responded immedately after a massage and others took several days, but after a while the aching pains in my legs have subsided! I couldn't believe that something so SIMPLE (something I could do myself) could end such a debilitating problem that numerous doctors & specialists couldn't figure out. Combined with acupuncture and craniosacral therapy & occasional professional deep-tissue massage I would say my pain is 99% gone. I am so glad I discovered this book...I never thought I would find the explanation (and the solution!) for all this pain!! I can now look forward to returning to a normal, pain-free life! Thanks so much to Clair Davies and others who contributed to making this book!!
P.S. I have just started reading through ALL the sections of this book (not just the ones for leg pain) since trigger point massage seems to help with all sorts of pain (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, etc). So from now on I will consult this book FIRST before seeking a doctor or some medication for any type of pain. My only regret is that I didn't buy this book sooner!!
Book Review: Comprehensive Summary: 4 Stars
I find The Trigger Point Therapy Wookbook very detailed and comprehensive. You should only buy this wookbook if you are serious about finding a solution and prepared to study and work on it. I have serious sciatic pain and have tried everything to get relief. The book, with quite a bit of study, helped me located the muscles causing the problem. Using the 'ball' technique I massaged the appropriate 'tigger points'. After 3 weeks, persistence is also required, I have begun to get relief and the pain has diminished. The bottom line is this book is a great book provided your motivated. Its not for the faint hearted and its not a 'quick fix'.
Book Review: Cured my Plantar Fasciitis and lots of other things! Summary: 5 Stars
I was unable to walk for any length of time due to Plantar Fasciitis in my left foot. In addition I had a shooting pain up the side of my left ankle on every step. None of the following helped: supportive shoes, orthotics (OTC or custom), stretching, icing, NSAIDs, cortisone shots, 2 podiatrists, 1 physical therapist.
I got this book and applied the techniques. Within a few weeks the classic PF pain was gone but I still had the shooting pain up the ankle. That pain was caused by trigger points in the Peroneus muscles. It took some time to locate them as they were very small and located under tendons, etc. I can now walk 18 holes of golf. I threw away all of my orthotics as they didn't help me for 2 years. I go barefoot whenever I want. I monitor these trigger points and apply massage as needed. If you are older and have a chronic problem you will find that there is no quick fix. You will have to apply these techniques indefinitely although less frequently to make sure they do not return. But what a tool to lead a more pain free life!
I also have a problem with irregular heartbeat that was helped by inactivating the cardiac arrhythmia point. Recently I started having episodes of belching which brought on the irregular heartbeat. I alleviated the belching by working on the upper abdominal trigger points.
In addition to the PF and irregular heartbeat, the technique enabled me to raise my arms above my head and pull of a tight jacket, reduced my chronic back pain, helped my golfer's elbow and relieved the tightness in my fingers which was caused by trigger points in my forearms.
As with anything, you will get as much out of it as you put into it. I tell anyone who will listen to buy this wonderful book.
I also recommend the Knobble II. I use this everyday. It really saves the hands. I also use the Body Back Buddy for my back. I have not had too much success with the ball against the wall.
You might get some bruises at first from overly enthusiastic application of the massage but it is a small price to pay for the pain relief and you will learn how much pressure to apply over time.
Book Review: Cured my back pain Summary: 5 Stars
This pain started in a Ti Chi exercise class about 6 years ago. Just a nagging mid back pain that came and went. Chiropractic treatment helped but I could not do aerobics because it would come back. The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook showed me where and how to treat it. I got relief from the first self treatment and was cured within one week. Since then I have helped my son with his knee pain. I highly recommend this book, much pain and suffering can be avoided!
