Book Review: An Accessible Entree to the Ancient World in which the Trojan War Took Place

One of the persistent and compelling stories of Western Civilization is the legend of the Trojan War pitting Achilles and Hector and ending with the classic wooden horse with Greeks hidden inside that made possible their defeat of the city-state of Troy. Told about in the works of Homer, the "Iliad," which relates the latter stages of the siege of Troy, and the "Odyssey," describing the journey home of Odysseus from that war, it is an epic struggle that has long been rooted in myth and legend and questioned as an actual event.
This useful introduction is a compelling study that explores the mythic story in literature and poetry, archeology, and history. Using a three-part structure, "The Trojan War" first considers the possibility of the Greek story of Homer as more fact than fiction, locating the site of the historic city on the Aegean using modern archeological investigations, and using historical research to uncover the nature of the conflict and locate it in time and space. The authors also include a biographical section that relates what is known about the various characters included in the account. Finally, the authors include other documentary materials to highlight the life and times of the era in which the Trogan war took place. Taken altogether, this is an excellent basic introduction to this fascinating subject in ancient history.
