Book Reviews of The TurnaroundBook Review: the best Summary: 5 Stars
if you're a reader of crime novels, than mr. pelacanos is required reading.there is currently no one better.i have just aquired "the turnaround", and have yet to read it. how can i give a novel 5 stars without reading it? simple, pelacanos can not write an average book; i have read all his previous fiction, and i gave each one 5 stars. why should this one be different.
his writing talent was also greatly appreciated on the hbo classic series, "the wire."
i would like to amend my opening statement by just stating if you're a reader period, than mr. pelacanos should be on your required reading list.
it's a week later, and i've just finished reading 'the turnaround' and, yes, it's a five star winner. mr. pelacanos makes no wrong turns in this narrative about love and forgiveness.
Book Review: the turnaround Summary: 2 Stars
i still don't understand all the huzzahs surrounding the writing of george pelecanos. i enjoyed his last book "the night gardener" but from the critical reviews it got you'd think he was tolstoy. i started to read his latest "the turnaround" and just had to put it to rest about a hundred pages in. two (three?) major things annoyed the hell out of me, and these may apply to his other books as well. first is the dialogue: do people really, i mean REALLY, talk to each other like this? yes they do...on bad sitcoms. in this novel it's the interaction among the families that made me gag - in past novels it's the patter among cops. i've never been a cop but, i mean come on, can derek strange be a bigger dork? the other major annoyance is the CONSTANT reminder that we are in the DC/VA/MD area. i lived many years in that region and i am certainly fond of it, but i don't need to know the name of every diner/corner shop/liquor store/dry cleaner/dive bar etc etc etc and what street it's on in what part of town, especially when none of these places play any role in the story. I GET IT!!! the story takes place in the dc metropolitan area!! ditto his listing of EVERY SINGLE radio station that's ever existed there and what kind of music it plays, and the name of every song that every character is has or will listen to, along with the singer/songwriter/band who wrote said song, plus any and every concert where somebody, ANYBODY, might have heard it.
just too much filler.
