Book Reviews of The Unlikely Spy

Book Review: An Edge of Your Seat Thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

In "The Unlikely Spy", Daniel Silva, creates a realistic journey through wartime London prior to the Normandy invasion. Known for his series of novels featuring art restorer and Mossad agent Gabriel Allon, this novel is his first, I believe and is extremely well crafted.

He has successfully penetrated the British consciousness and his protagonist, a historian and professor drafted by Churchill to become a spy hunter and empowered to root out and arrest German agents. His opponent, a German spy named Catherine Blake, has lived under deep cover in Britain for several years and is assigned to ferret out the secrets of the pending Allied invasion of Normandy.

Blake is the perfect spy. She is beautiful, blackmailed by her Nazi controllers, and a sociopath . . . all rolled into one. This is a battle of wits and cross/double-cross and you are never really sure until the last page just what is really going on.

The descriptions of wartime London are portrayed so vividly that you feel the author lived through the years himself.
This is an edge of-your seat spy novel that you are not able to put down until the very end.

I was so engrossed in the story that I gladly read it again after a two year lapse.

Book Review: An Enjoyable Spy Read
Summary: 4 Stars

"An Unlikely Spy", by Daniel Silva, is an enjoyable World War II spy novel - and my first Silva book. Overall, a decent read. Though, it's never really clear who the unlikely spy actually is. Hmm? There is one twist at the end, but I think most readers will see it coming long before they get to that point. Still, it's a worthwhile summer read for those into the genre of World War II spying. There are even cameo appearances by Himmler, Hitler, and Sir Lord Winston Churchill himself. The description early in the book of Churchill conducting a meeting while taking his bath is a hoot, and one that I can really see him doing based on all I know of him. The spying activities themselves take place around the D-Day planning efforts, specifically the Operation Mulberry artificial harbor. After this, I will likely try another Silva novel at some point.

Book Review: An Unabashedly Good Spy Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

Daniel Silva's "The Unlikely Spy" is a riveting read that will keep you sitting on the edge of your chair madly flipping the pages as you quickly try to reach the exciting conclusion of this World War II spy thriller. The writing is so realistic that it will prompt you to run to the library for historical accounts of the great German versus British conflict of the 20th century to determine if Silva has merely clothed nonfiction in the format of a novel.

Book Review: An Unlikely Hero
Summary: 4 Stars

I am an avid Daniel Silva fan, but my experience has been with the Gabriel Allon series. I picked up the Unlikely Spy over the D-Day weekend, and was engrossed by Silva's ability to draw me back 60 years. The story revolves around Alfred Vicary, a history professor cum intelligence operative who is drawn into tracking down a German spy and accomplices who is attempting to ascertain the pending invasion plans of France by the Allies. What ensues is a classic spy story that held me captive to the last page. I heartily recommend it for fans of early Greg Iles.

Book Review: An engrossing espionage tale
Summary: 4 Stars

This was my first book by Daniel Silva and I was not disappointed. The novel had lots of twists and turns and kept a fast pace throughout. I love that Silva used real historical figures including Churchill and Hitler. Recommended for mystery and history fans alike!
